Q 9) Can awareness be located in time or space?

When knowing or noticing something happens, awareness of that object occurs. Right now I am writing these words, thinking, and breathing, and I am also aware that this is happening. This knowing ability is awareness. Now the question is: Can awareness be located in time or space? Let us understand this slowly.

a) When we talk about space, we talk about locations like a room, city, or even the body. Right now I am sitting inside a room. I can see my laptop, different chairs, a table, walls, a water bottle, etc. My eyes, through my mind, are noticing all these things. In other words, awareness is observing all these things. Now this awareness is not something inside my room. My awareness is not an object. It is not like a chair or table inside a room. Even if we look at our body, we know about it. It is awareness which knows the body. I can notice my body parts like hands, legs, heartbeat, etc. The knowledge of this body is through awareness. This awareness cannot be located in some space as an object, as it is the cause of knowing objects. The very existence of space is because of this awareness.

b) We know that time is nothing but the total of past, present, and future. For the last 2–3 days I had many experiences:

i) I was feeling compassionate towards my maid when my mother and wife were getting angry with her.
ii) Some relative wanted to visit our home, and I truthfully said that I was busy. That made the relative a little sad, and that created guilt inside me.
iii) I was chanting divine names for a few minutes, and that released stress from deep layers of my mind.
iv) I was studying Srila Prabhupada’s commentary on Srimad Bhagavatam, and I was thinking about it.

Now notice something interesting. All these experiences happened in different time periods: morning, afternoon, evening, and night. During all these time periods, something remained the same throughout, and that is the awareness of all these experiences. I was aware when I was thinking, feeling compassionate, chanting, or feeling stress. The experiences kept on changing, but the silent observer of everything remained the same. Awareness is something that is aware of time passing; it cannot be inside time. Just like a clock shows the passage of time, similarly awareness knows the happening of different experiences in different time periods. That is possible only if time is inside awareness, not awareness inside time.

c) My awareness is like the screen of a television. Different movies may play on the screen: action, sadness, comedy. But the screen remains the same. In the same way, in awareness different things appear—stress, peace, thoughts, different memories—but awareness remains the unchanging background. Awareness is not something that can be found like an object. It knows space, time, and experiences; it is the knower of everything. Since awareness is the one which knows time and space, it cannot be located in time or space. Awareness is the silent knower of all experiences, which appear and disappear inside it.

Q 12) Is organization distortion, or simply movement?

When we hear the words awareness and organization , the first thought that may come to our mind is this: if awareness is natural and spontaneous, then why do we sometimes feel that it has become organized? And if organization happens within awareness, is it a distortion or a natural movement? Awareness is simply noticing our own experiences. Right now, as I am writing this article, I am sitting at a table on a chair, working on a laptop, and thinking about how to explain this question in simple words. I know all these moment-to-moment events. This knowing is awareness. People often get too attracted to this word and feel that it is something mystical or special. But actually, it is something we experience all the time. A student may be sitting in a class, learning from the teacher, writing notes with his pen, and he might also feel sleepy. Simply knowing all these experiences is nothing but awareness. Some kind of organization happens naturally within awareness. We can...

Q 11) Does organization happen within awareness itself?

When I reflect on this question, I feel like answering it through the moment-to-moment experiences of the last two days. The organization within awareness happens naturally when I observe my daily activities. Yesterday, when I was teaching my student, he was asking many questions. He was writing what I was telling him, and I was engaged with the content of the topic I was teaching. I was also taking help from different tools for teaching. Many things were happening together, and everything was happening in my awareness. I never had to consciously organize everything. With clarity of mind and just being aware of everything, the organization of all these micro events happened automatically. Everything happened in order by itself. The situation was getting organized by itself. I did not have to make any special effort for it. Another example is from yesterday when I was working on my laptop. One part of me was typing on the laptop, another part was feeling hungry, and one part of me...

Q 10) Does awareness need organizing?

Awareness, in simple words, means knowing what is happening. It gives the ability to notice things inside oneself and outside as well. Right now I am writing on a laptop, sitting on a chair, and also feeling a little hungry. This knowing is called awareness. Now the question is: “Does awareness need organizing?” No, it doesn’t need any special organizing. It happens instantly and automatically, like breathing or the heartbeat happens automatically. It is naturally present and doesn’t need to be arranged, managed, or controlled like other things. ·        When I wake up in the morning, I see the sunlight from the window and hear the sound of birds. Now, does this awareness happen because I organized or managed my awareness? No, this happens naturally. ·        I was walking outside and saw people walking, cars passing, the sound of vehicle horns, felt the wind on my face, and felt the touch of the ground. All these exp...
